Our team is passionate about what we do and we are looking for a Deputy Business Manager to join us and help drive our business forward. As the Deputy Business Manager, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Business Manager in the daily operations of the Bursary and the strategic planning of the school.


We are looking for a qualified Accountant or a part qualified accountant who wishes to complete their study. The school is an accredited ICAEW trainer and you will be able to complete your studies whilst working at the school.

Job Description - Deputy Business Manager

Devonport High School for Boys is an oversubscribed, outstanding boys’ grammar school which converted to academy status in March 2011. The school is proud of its traditions which go back to its founding in 1896 and the school successfully serves a wide designated area encompassing Plymouth, East Cornwall and the South Hams.


We are looking to recruit a qualified or part qualified Accountant with a relevant financial background. The Business Services function encompasses financial, HR, personnel and payroll functions, and although the main emphasis of the role will be on financial operations, the person appointed will be expected to provide support across all aspects of the Business Services functions.

The postholder will report to the school’s Business Manager.

Key Purpose of Job

  • Reporting to the School Business Manager in support of the school’s finance, HR, personnel, payroll and business functions.
  • Innovating and developing systems and procedures as necessary to deal with existing and new business requirements.
  • Maintaining high levels of service provision to staff, students and parents in the resolution of enquiries arising from the operation of the school’s finance, payroll and personnel and business systems.

Key Skills

  • A good understanding of financial procedures and be at least studying towards an Accountancy qualification.
  • A high level of numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail, with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work comfortably and innovatively with IT.
  • Good problem-solving skills. Able to lead, design and implement procedures that support the financial work of the school.
  • Articulate and empathetic. Able to work with sensitivity and discretion and communicate the importance of financial principles and concepts to a ‘non-financial’ audience.

Key Duties

  • Responsibility for a range of financial procedures including overseeing the devolved distribution of orders and invoicing and, where appropriate, cash collection and debt recovery.
  • Preparation of all records in readiness for the Annual Audit
  • Financial support for charitable collections / initiatives taking place.
  • Manage and administer the expense claims
  • Assistance with the identification and reporting of budget irregularities
  • Reconciliation of control accounts.
  • Administration of internal recharges to include photocopying, LG phones, minibus and central stationery. Ensuring that recharges are posted to the ledger at the earliest opportunity.
  • Monitoring of aged debtors / creditors
  • Preparation and submission of quarterly VAT returns.
  • Administration of payments over and payroll journals as appropriate.
  • Support with the administration and monitoring of DHSB Donor Accounts including the updating of donor records, bank reconciliation and Gift Aid claims as appropriate.
  • Administration and submission of school workforce census information.
  • Preparation and completion of monthly payroll input spreadsheets and operation of the payroll portal in conjunction with the Business Manager.
  • The post holder will be expected to undertake any other duties commensurate with the overall level of the post.
