Trainee Accountant

Be free to be yourself

‘We put our people first’ may not be something that you expect to hear from a firm of accountants and tax advisers. But we understand that doing this helps our business to succeed, our clients to flourish and our communities to thrive. We work together to make a difference. Here’s your opportunity to do the same.

The opportunity

Being bright, professional, and a clear communicator is what matters to us - no matter the subjects you’ve studied so far. We like working with people who are willing to be challenged, ready to be inspired, and are keen to collaborate.

We’re pleased to invite applications from either school leavers or graduates, who have an interest in working within BKL. We have opportunities in both our Accounts and Audit departments.

Depending on your previous education, you will have the opportunity to study for the Association of Chartered Accountants qualification (ACA) or the Association of Accounting Technicians qualification (AAT) to start in August/September 2024

Your training will be provided on an apprenticeship scheme, and your progress will be measured through a combination of your day-to-day achievements and those attained via your ongoing exams.

Formal training and beyond

We’ll provide structured development on audit, accounts, outsourcing and tax. Your IT training will come from our own experts and other experienced trainers. We work closely with Kaplan, whose apprenticeship training encompasses leading online learning technologies, award-winning study materials and highly experienced tutors.

You’ll develop your wider interpersonal and professional skills, again with internal and external providers.

After you’ve qualified, we’ll continue to support your growth through additional professional qualifications, new development programmes, a range of work opportunities and careers guidance.

How you’ll make a difference

These roles are particularly suited to people who like problem solving and a fast-changing environment. In all our roles, we value people who are happy to work independently while recognising that BKL thrives on teamwork.

You will be expected to develop and deliver technical excellence, which means you’ll need the qualities that this will demand: resilience is important. You need to be able to study and to advance your thinking. We’re open to how you demonstrate this.

Qualifications: what you’ll need

If you are a school leaver and joining on the AAT pathway:

  • GCSE grades A* to C (including a B or above in Maths and English Language, or a 5 for those who passed exams from 2017 onwards) or the equivalent qualifications

For graduates who would join on the ACA pathway:

  • Minimum 2:1 degree in any subject

What we offer

As trainees at a leading accountancy firm, you'll enjoy

  • Paid study support and development opportunities Private medical cover Season ticket loan Holiday entitlement that increases the longer you work with us A varied calendar of social events during a typical year, including many with wellbeing and inclusion in mind Voluntary work with our sponsored causes

Take your next step

If you’re interested in building your professional career at BKL and making a difference to our team, our clients and our firm, we’d be delighted to hear from you.

This application is for our August and September 2024 intake. We will be undertaking initial phone screening in November 2023, with assessment days in January 2024.

Application and selection process

We expect you to explain your motivation to apply for a role at BKL and we need you to share your (expected) grades in your CV with us.

Aptitude and psychometric testing will be part of our selection process.

Company

We’re not the only Top 50 firm of chartered accountants and tax advisers you’ll find in this guide. Nor are we the only people offering graduates and school leavers exciting opportunities to work with clients across a range of sectors during ACA training. So who are we and why should you choose us? We like having bright, hard-working trainees join us each year and if you’re one of them, your colleagues will help you to give your best. ‘High challenge, high support’ is the balance we aim for. By making a difference to you, we’re helping you do the same for our clients and communities. As long as you’re giving your best, we want you to feel your best. To help us keep wellbeing as a priority at BKL, we support Mind and they’ve awarded us bronze in their Workplace Wellbeing Index. Inclusion matters to us too. The more diverse we are – in people, experiences and ideas – the better we become. We’re working with Inclusive Employers on this, to make sure that whatever your background when you join us, you feel a sense of belonging and a desire to get involved in the life of BKL. Even before you qualify, you can look forward to progression: not just in the money you earn but in the recognition you earn. We’ll help you develop as a professional and as a person. If you’re now thinking about applying for a role at BKL, what are we looking for? We want individuals who can show drive, ambition and commitment. It doesn’t matter where you’ve come from; it’s all about where you’re heading and what you want to do. If you’re ready to put in the effort and the commitment, we’re ready to work with you.
