Trainee, Tax

We are looking for individuals who wish to start their tax career with us in our Taunton office. This role would be starting in the summer, and we offer excellent support and training that will help you develop the skills you need to succeed as a professional and to progress until you realise your full potential.

The UK tax code is vast and it changes at pace. Tax involves politics, legislation and case law, economics and for those of us at Albert Goodman means ensuring our clients achieve their financial and personal objectives tax efficiently.

You will be working in an established Tax Department in a trainee role, gaining experience to become a key member in both the office and wider team. As with the beginning of any career, this position must start with the basics. Your role will initially involve several aspects including preparing tax returns and other H M Revenue & Customs compliance documents on behalf of clients, identifying planning opportunities and engaging with our specialist teams.

You will have support and on the job training from managers and other senior staff. During your training you will be expected to develop an understanding of the practical issues involved in delivering a high quality service to our clients, whilst collaborating with your financial adviser and accountancy colleagues.

Both practical and theoretical training will be supported, with the aim to becoming a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians. We provide and fund technical training with recognised training providers, provision of books and materials, student registration fees, annual student subscription and exemption/examination entry fees.

Qualifications Required

To achieve the qualification and to consistently give the best and most up to date advice to clients, you will need to be competent at studying and passing exams. Your historic academic or professional results are used as a guide when shortlisting, however we will also consider other factors such as experience, other qualifications and skills. As an indicator we look for ideally a minimum of 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) mostly at Grade A*-B / 9 – 5, including Maths and English and a minimum of 2 A Levels (or equivalent) grade A*- B. If you possess a degree, ideally you will have achieved a 2:1 or above.

• Professional, discreet & a smart worker;
• Driven and enthusiastic;
• Ideally prior knowledge of tax, but general interest in business, accountancy and tax will be expected.
