If you’re considering training to be a Chartered Accountant then you’ve arrived at the right place! We usually take on two to three new students each year, starting the recruitment process in the Spring, with the students joining us in the September of the same year, following them receiving the appropriate grades at A level or with their degree.

There are two routes to training with us at Clarkson Hyde. First of all, A level students have the opportunity to begin with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification, which sets them directly on a career path from higher education at school, earning a good starting salary and receiving full study package support. Our minimum A level grade requirements are three Bs (or equivalent for at least the same number of ucas points), so we’ll only be able to consider students who have predicted grades at that level or above.

There are 15 exam modules in the course and students typically take around 1 – 2 years to complete them (there is freedom to speed things up or slow things down, depending on the student’s preference). Students will gain practical work experience as a ‘junior’ on client jobs, initially shadowing and then working alongside more senior members of our team, and they will attend First Intuition College in Central London for the courses. Some courses are held over the weekend.

Once the student has successfully completed the AAT course, they can then move on to the ACA qualificationwith the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (the highest professional body for accountants in this country and our governing body at Clarkson Hyde).

The second route is for university degree level students to begin with the ACA qualification. There are also 15 exam modules and, as with the AAT course, students at Clarkson Hyde will be given time to attend courses at First Intuition College in London. Our students usually take these exams comfortably over a 3 year period and there is a requirements to have 450 hours of practical work experience, among other requirements, before you can qualify.

The minimum entry requirement for our ACA students is a 2.1 degree, or a good pass at AAT.

As a Chartered Accountant, you will have an excellent skills base, great earning potential and the opportunity to develop a varied career in either practice (helping client businesses) or in industry, as a member of an in-house accounting team.

What can clients expect from choosing to work with Clarkson Hyde?

An eye on their future goals

First of all, we will want to get an understanding of what our clients’ personal financial goals are, and, if they’re a business owner, we help draw a picture of where the business needs to get to in order to achieve them.

We feel that the forward-looking accountant needs to be far more than a number cruncher and box checker and pride ourselves on being our clients’ primary business advisors, offering a practical and commercial viewpoint. We look at the bigger picture and long term plans, as well as help manage here and now priorities, providing excellent accounting and tax efficiency advice, through to looking at merger, acquisition and eventually sale options for the business.

If clients need support with overseas business, they will be well looked after by our colleagues at Clarkson Hyde Global, an association of independent accountants that we helped found in 1997, where each member firm has made a commitment to delivering the same high quality advice and support that our clients rely on from us.

Fast, down to earth communication

If you conjure up an image of the stereotypical accountant, you can rest assured that the Clarkson Hyde team are the complete opposite to that ‘stuffy professionals’ image.

We believe in fast, open communication and won’t aim to impress with ‘jargon’ and clever language, only the support and solutions that we deliver.
